Origins & Reception | Making decisions that last

Born from conflict. Built for collaboration.

The Lewis Method of Deep Democracy was developed in South Africa after apartheid to help deeply divided teams overcome conflict, rebuild trust and work together across profound differences.

The method was shaped by a challenging reality: different experiences, cultures, power structures and histories had created deep divisions between people. Deep Democracy offered a way to bring these differences into the open and create space for people to work at eye level.

Its core principle remains simple: every voice matters. Especially when we disagree.

Today, Deep Democracy is used as a leadership, communication and mediation method in more than 20 countries worldwide, helping teams address conflict, include different perspectives and make decisions that people can genuinely commit to.

From divided teams to meaningful collaboration.

What do people think of Deep Democracy?!

We had the chance to interview leaders in the German diversity space on their opinion of Deep Democracy. Here is what they have to say.

What it is | Deep Democracy

Every voice matters. Especially when perspectives differ.

The Lewis Method of Deep Democracy is a practical communication and facilitation method for working with conflict, tension and difficult decisions. At its core are eight practical tools that can be used in one-to-one and group settings to bring underlying tensions to the surface, include different perspectives and work through disagreement constructively.

Deep Democracy is not about avoiding conflict or forcing consensus. It is about creating the conditions to address differences openly and find decisions that people can genuinely support. When people trust in their ability to work through conflict, they are more likely to speak up, share ideas and challenge each other constructively. The result is stronger collaboration, better communication and more resilient teams.

Conflict doesn’t have to divide us. It can help us move forward.

Connecting the most important aspects of high performing work environments

Deep Democracy brings together five key areas: conflict and communication, group dynamics, feedback, culture and team building, and leadership through participation.

The method is structured across four levels, each building on the previous one. Levels 1 & 2 are designed for practitioners who want to apply Deep Democracy within their own teams and organisations. Levels 3 & 4 go deeper into mediation and advanced conflict work, preparing practitioners to support other teams and organisations as professional facilitators and mediators.
